You see commercials for them all the time on television, but no one ever really explains what an air purifier really is. It almost seems as though it is just a ploy to get you to spend money, with no real explanation of how it is going to purify the air you breathe. However, many air purifiers are quite functional and can have a great impact on your home environment. How do these devices work, and how can they be of benefit to your overall health?
An air purifier’s function is to remove substances from the air that can be irritating to the nose, throat, lungs, and other instruments used to breathe in. If you have dogs or cats, you see the physical evidence on your floor and furniture of the dander and hair that are floating around in the air you breathe. Pollen and other allergens from indoor plants also reduce the quality of the air in your home, easily causing outbreaks of allergies like hay fever. An air purifier works like a vacuum or a magnet for these substances that are harmful and irritating to your breathing passages, literally purifying your home atmosphere.
While not all air purifiers function the same way, they do perform the same job in the end. Choosing one for your home may leave you baffled if you don’t know what to look for. First of all, you can’t expect a single unit to cleanse an entire 2,000 square foot home. Most of these machines are made for a single room application, and the size of the room that can be thoroughly cleansed varies from brand to brand. Make sure you aren’t overworking your air purifier or expecting too much from it. Also, place the air purifier appropriately in the room. This means locating it in a position that is somewhat centralized, away from surfaces that tend to collect hair and dander (it will attract more to this area), and in a space ventilated and open enough for air to circulate through it.
